History

Jeddah has a very large number of Indian expatriates, many of whom live here with their families. A vast majority of these Indians are Muslims. The social life of Indians in Jeddah is commendably active due to the presence of several organizations and clubs that serve the community in different dimensions. Some of them promote sports and games while some others keep the cultural traditions of the localities they come from alive, through different programs. No doubt, some of these groups are engaged in educational, religious and charity activities too.

It was in the year 1992 that a group of Indian ladies from the state of Kerala formed an organization by name "Indian Women's Organization (IWO)". The motive behind forming this association was the strong feeling that the religious activities among the Indian women were far less when compared to other programs. The group felt the strong need for the propagation of Qur'an and Sunna among their compatriots, a good number of whom were, and still are, unable to read the Holy Book. The organization thus embarked on its humble mission with whatever little resources at hand, identifying itself to be the women's wing of "Indian Islahi Centre, Jeddah".
